NMAIMH Making a Difference: Promoting & supporting healthy development and nurturing relationships for all infants and young children in New Mexico.

Supporting a Competent Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Workforce

In collaboration with ZERO TO THREE Center for Training Services, the NMAIMH was a proud co-sponsor with the UNM Center for Develpment and Disability of training on the DC: 0-3R with Donna Weston, Ph.D. On June 9 & 10, 2009 Dr. Weston presented on the Diagnostic Classification of Mental Health and Developmental Disorders of Infancy and Early Childhood: REVISED EDITION. Nearly all who attended on June 9th and 10th also chose to attend the June 11th training that more specifically addressed the DC: 0-3R Axis II - Assessing Relationships and Attachment.

The New Mexico Association for Infant Mental Health (NMAIMH) advocates for the application of infant mental health principles in services for infants, young children and their caregivers throughout our state and across multiple service settings. In 2005 the NMAIMH entered into a licensing agreement with the Michigan Association for Infant Mental Health (MI-AIMH) to use the Competency Guidelines for Culturally Sensitive, Relationship-Based Practice Promoting Infant Mental Health©. With this agreement, and in keeping with the Strategic Plan for Infant Mental Health in New Mexico (2003), NMAIMH has committed to use these nationally recognized competencies to systematize training and consultation supports at various levels of infant/early childhood and family service provision promoting infant mental health. For a detailed description of the requirements met by each level when seeking endorsement, go to the Endorsement Materials page. The competencies shared here are used to define, strengthen, and value New Mexico’s infant/early childhood and family workforce.

Level 1 Competency Guidelines - Infant-Family Associate

Level 2 Competency Guidelines - Infant-Family Specialist

Level 3 Compentecy Guidelines - Infant Mental Health Specialist

Level 4 Competency Guidelines - Infant Mental Health Mentor

The competencies can be used by anyone, across infant/early childhood service settings.
The NMAIMH values all degreed and non-degreed professionals working with families/caregivers of young children. This diverse group of professionals is increasingly aware of the importance of early caregiving relationships to the optimal safety, health and development of young children.

Those who develop and offer training to early childhood mental health professionals are encouraged to use the competenices to guide training design and delivery. When doing so, trainers are encouraged to identify the NMAIMH competencies addressed and provide this information to training participants.

Consumers of early childhood mental health training are encouraged to ask trainers to identify the NMAIMH competencies being addresssed.

There are numerous training opportunities available for early childhood and behavioral health providers throughout New Mexico. As the NMAIMH learns of trainings that idenitfy the specific NMAIMH competencies they are addressing, we will attempt to share the information here and also post the information to our NMAIMH Members listserv. All trainings related to the competencies, regardless of the trainer or affiliation with the NMAIMH, can be applied to NMAIMH members' endorsement portfolios.

The New Mexico Association for Infant Mental Health (NMAIMH) is proud to cosponsor with the Early Childhood Network at the UNM Center for Development and Disability, the Annual Interdisciplinary Early Care and Intervention Conference each November. For more information, go to: http://cdd.unm.edu/ecspd/ecn/about.asp

This co-sponsorship has made it possible to bring such nationally recognized experts to New Mexico, as Mary Claire Heffron, PhD, Victor Bernstein, PhD, and Neil W. Boris, MD. The conference offers NMAIMH Members an opportunity to enhance our competence as we provide culturally-sensitive, relationship-based services that promote infant mental health.
