Sam Hufnagel
Board President

Sam Hufnagel was born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico and currently lives in the Sawmill neighborhood with his wife, daughter, cats and plants.

He studied Psychology at UNM and Social Work at New Mexico State. He is an LCSW with a long history of serving families of infants and young children. For the past decade he has provided home visiting services through Early Intervention programs. In 2022, he established his private practice, Collaborative Counseling 505, to work individually with parents and young children and provide consultation and reflective practices to early childhood programs and other professionals. He is also an Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultant with SEED.

Sam is endorsed with the New Mexico Association of Infant Mental Health; he is trained in intervention modalities such as Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and is a Circle of Security parent and classroom facilitator and a registered classroom coach.

Mary Becker
Vice President

Mary Becker brings nearly 30 years of experience serving children and families in Bernalillo County. She currently serves as the Director of Community Services at LifeROOTS, Inc., where she oversees Early Intervention, Home Visiting, and Supported Employment programs. Her leadership reflects a deep commitment to strengthening systems of care and supporting professionals who work with young children and families.

Mary earned a Bachelor’s degree in Communicative Sciences and a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of New Mexico. She holds endorsements in Infant Mental Health and Reflective Supervision and is certified as a developmental specialist. Throughout her career, she has supported early childhood professionals through training, mentorship, and advocacy, and she actively participates in community coalitions and collaborative initiatives.

Mary values connection both professionally and personally. She and her husband share a blended family of six children, four grandchildren, a cherished “fairy godbaby,” and four pampered dogs. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, gardening, crocheting, reading, and sending handwritten letters through old-fashioned snail mail.

Candy Jardine Morrow
Treasurer

Candy Jardine Morrow has worked in the early childhood field for over 25 years and holds a master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education. She is passionate about serving New Mexico’s children and families by promoting resilience, opportunity, and better outcomes. Candy’s experience spans Early Head Start classrooms and Home Visiting, and she now supports home visiting programs and professionals through her work at CommonSpirit St. Joseph’s Children.

Candy actively advocates for policies that advance quality early childhood programs in New Mexico. Endorsed as an Infant/Family Specialist in 2017 and with a Reflective Consultation Endorsement add-on, she continues to deepen her reflective practice to provide Endorsed Reflective Consultation as a contractor. Candy believes reflective supervision is vital to building relationships and supporting professionals. She is committed to ensuring children and families receive the best care by empowering the professionals who serve them through the New Mexico Association for Infant Mental Health.

Diana O’Brien, M.S.,LMFT,IMH-E
Past President

Diana O’Brien is the Director of Impact and Outreach for the Community Foundation of Southern New Mexico (CFSNM). She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with expertise in collective impact, community engagement, teaching, and clinical behavioral health.

Diana earned her Infant Mental Health Endorsement in 2021 and is the founder of the Random Acts of Kindtrip, a project promoting kindness and community connection. In her role at CFSNM, Diana focuses on strengthening communities through advocacy and program development that fosters systemic and generational change. She is also adjunct faculty at New Mexico State University and actively serves on boards and coalitions, including Tierra Del Sol Housing Corporation and Doña Ana County Early Childhood Education Coalition.

A proud New Mexican, Diana is passionate about creating spaces where individuals feel valued and connected. She resides in Las Cruces with her husband and two dogs, enjoying travel and passionately serving the state of New Mexico.

Felicia Ramirez
Board Secretary

Felicia Ramirez, a New Mexico native from La Mesa, has dedicated her career to supporting children and families. She began as a Developmental Specialist and Family Service Coordinator with Aprendamos Intervention Team and later taught Head Start for Las Cruces Public Schools (LCPS). Currently, she serves as the Social Emotional Specialist for LCPS’s Early Childhood Program.

Felicia holds a BA in Education from the University of Arizona and an MA in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education from New Mexico State University. She has also worked as an Online ESL Instructor with VIPKid and supports the McKinney-Vento Program as a tutor and mentor.

Felicia participates in the Flourishing Families Mentoring Program by Jardin de los Niños and draws inspiration from her three children, Christopher, Alexie, and Elijah. In her free time, she enjoys reading, fitness, and promoting health and wellness.

Inez Ingle, M.ED., DSIII, IMH-E
Endorsement Committee

Inez Ingle has been a dedicated member of the Association and its Board of Directors since 2009 and currently serves as Chair of the Endorsement Committee. She has held an Infant Mental Health–Clinical Endorsement since 2009 and remains deeply committed to advancing high standards of reflective, relationship-based practice.

Inez earned a degree in Psychology with a minor in Anthropology from Bennington College and later completed a Master’s degree in Early Childhood/Special Education at Lesley College. Since relocating to New Mexico in 1982, she has focused her work in Early Childhood Intervention, primarily serving infants, toddlers, and their families in Rio Arriba County.

In addition to providing direct services, Inez has spent many years offering Reflective Supervision to support professionals in their work with young children and families. Her practice is grounded in cooperation, collaboration, communication, and respect. She values slowing down, engaging in thoughtful reflection, and fostering meaningful relationships in both her professional and personal life.

Dr. Jeannie Baca
Promotion, Training, and Website Chair

Dr. Jeannie Baca brings more than twenty-five years of experience in education and nonprofit leadership, grounded in a deep commitment to expanding opportunities that promote educational success, economic stability, and positive health outcomes for children and families across New Mexico.

Throughout her career, Dr. Baca has held leadership roles in academic affairs and student services at the University of New Mexico, New Mexico State University, and Central New Mexico Community College. Her work centers on educational equity, workforce development, and culturally responsive leadership. She is especially passionate about maternal and child health and the role that early intervention supports, family engagement, and strong early intervention systems play in long-term outcomes for children. 

Dr. Baca holds a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Administration, an M.A. in Organizational Management, a B.A. in Psychology and Government, and an A.A.S. in Legal Assistant Studies. Most recently, she served as Quality Performance Officer for Youth Development, Inc.’s Early Childhood Education Division, where she led quality improvement and compliance efforts for Head Start Programs across three counties. Her leadership reflects a strong belief in collaboration, equity, and the power of culturally grounded systems to support families and strengthen communities. 

Julia Bergkamp, LMSW, IMH-E
 

Julia Bergkamp, LMSW, IMH-E, brings warmth, authenticity, and deep commitment to her work with young children and families. She serves as a therapist with Las Cumbres Community Services, supporting children ages 0–8 and their families across Northern New Mexico. As a mother, partner, advocate, and community member, Julia integrates her lived experience into her professional practice, showing up with empathy, humility, and a grounded, “keep it real” approach that fosters meaningful and trusting relationships.

Her clinical work is rooted in Child-Parent Psychotherapy, Child-Centered Play Therapy, and EMDR, with the relationship at the center of healing. Julia’s approach is trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and focused on meeting families where they are—emotionally and geographically. She provides services in homes, community settings, and from her office in Taos.

Having lived in Taos for nearly 20 years, Julia is deeply connected to the field of infant and early childhood mental health. Her experience spans home visiting, early intervention, consultation, training, and reflective supervision. She is committed to honoring the parallel process and elevating the voices of individuals and communities who are too often underrepresented.

Iliana Isabel Perez
 

Iliana Isabel Perez brings both lived experience and professional dedication to her work in early childhood and mental health. Raised in the rural borderlands and now residing in Anthony, New Mexico, Iliana serves as the ECE and Policy Coordinator at NGAGE. Her commitment to accessibility and awareness of mental health support is deeply rooted in her experiences growing up, becoming a parent, and working as an early childhood professional.

Iliana began her career as a home visitor, where she implemented trauma-informed practices and supported families in recognizing that seeking help is a strength, not a source of shame. Through Reflective Supervision, she embraced curiosity, openness, and ongoing professional growth while also building protective practices to prevent burnout.

She is passionate about collaboration across organizations and communities to strengthen the ecosystem of mental health. Iliana believes that by working together, we can expand access to support, promote healing, and create opportunities for children and families to thrive.

Liz Martinez, LMSW, IMH-E, IECMHC
Executive Director

Liz Martinez is the Executive Director of the New Mexico Association of Infant Mental Health. She holds a Bachelor”s degree in Psychology from the University of New Mexico and a Master of Social Work from New Mexico Highlands University. Liz has been dedicated to Early Childhood Education since 2001.

A lifelong New Mexico resident, Liz grew up in Roswell and now lives in Albuquerque’s South Valley with her husband and daughter. She is passionate about supporting infant mental health and early childhood development in her community.

Liz enjoys spending time outdoors—whether on the softball field or walking her dogs along the Rio Grande. Her love for both her work and family is rooted in her commitment to the well-being and development of children and families throughout New Mexico.

Katrina Castillo, M.Ed, IMH-E
Endorsement Coordinator

Katrina Castillo is a lifelong resident of Las Cruces, New Mexico, and has dedicated her career to Early Childhood Education. She is passionate about direct service and is a Master II State Approved Trainer. Katrina earned a Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Education and a Master of Arts in Special Education, focusing on teaching the visually impaired, from New Mexico State University.

Since 2006, Katrina has worked with NM GRADS as the Director of a Focus 5-Star Center, child care mentor, and statewide trainer. She has held an Infant Mental Health Endorsement since 2014 and has been involved with the New Mexico Association for Infant Mental Health (NMAIMH) since 2016.

As a mother of seven and a Treatment Foster Care parent, Katrina has welcomed many children into her home. She also enjoys CrossFit as part of her self-care routine.

Kassandra Gonzales, MA, LPCC, IMH-E, IECMHC
Agency Liaison with NM SEED

Kassandra Gonzales was born and raised in New Mexico. Kassandra holds a Bachelor of Science in Family Studies and a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from the University of New Mexico. She has recently received a graduate certificate in Infant & Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC) from Georgetown University. Kassandra was a 2023-2024 Bank Street College of Education Early Childhood Policy Fellow.

Her early childhood experience began as an early childhood educator for seven years, moving into the behavioral and mental health field where she started in a Treatment Foster Children, and Behavioral Management. In her clinical work, Kassandra is a trained play therapist for the past 7 years. In her most recent role prior to joining the NMAIMH, Kassandra worked at ECECD as the IECMHC Coordinator, where she worked to develop a statewide IECHMC program in collaboration with national and statewide experts in the field of IECMHC.

Kassandra still plays a role in the statewide IECMHC program in her role at the NMAIMH which offers her flexibility to be present with her preschool-aged son.
